“A Specific is something which, if always applied in the same way, same quantity to exact like conditions, will get the same results – by permitting the law to act.” (Dr. BJ Palmer Vol. 18 1934.)
Specifics in any job or profession are absolutely vital and the chiropractic profession is no exception. Dr. BJ Palmer, known as the developer of chiropractic, coined the term “specific” to describe Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic. Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic, otherwise known as Specific Chiropractic, is one of the oldest, most researched, and most advanced forms of chiropractic care. In the early days of chiropractic, chiropractors discovered that pressing on the bones of a person’s back resulted in better health… so what did the first chiropractors do? They pressed on multiple segments and regions of the spine – and got certain, albeit minimal, outcomes. However, Dr. Palmer was not satisfied with mediocre results and asked himself how chiropractors could provide the greatest benefit to patients, by adjusting the least amount of bones? What followed was years of research, trials, and tribulations, but ultimately Dr. Palmer narrowed down the chiropractic adjustment to be most effective for allowing patients to heal and hold adjustments by focusing on misalignments in the upper neck (C1, Atlas or C2, Axis). This became know as the “hole in one” adjustment or HIO because it provided such magnificent results.
Head & Neck Alignment
In 1946 Dr. Palmer gave permission for the chiropractic profession to call HIO chiropractic, “Specific Upper Cervical Chiropractic”. Today, Specific Upper Cervical Chiropractors represent a small slice of the chiropractic profession, but provide an incredibly gentle, detailed, sustainable solution to many health conditions by helping the body heal and function optimally. The effectiveness of Upper Cervical Chiropractic has been demonstrated in multiple case studies of people experiencing various conditions such as; fibromyalgia, meniere’s disease, migraine headaches, high blood pressure, nerve pain, diabetes, seizures, and various auto-immune conditions.
