The Healing Power of Meditation

People just like you and I have been using Meditation as a tool for thousands and thousands of years.  Meditation is a form of training or refocusing the mind.  In the same way exercise and movement have been shown to benefit the body, meditation is a deeply powerful way of training the mind.  Meditation has been shown to provide many health and deep healing benefits.

In this post we will discover the healing benefits of meditation, how to do it, and why is it important.  I believe a recent increase and interest in meditation comes from the growing need for civilization to slow down and seek balance.  In a world that bombards us with notifications, alerts, and deadlines we have lost control of our focus and attention, which leads to evolving stress and lack of productivity.

The Benefits

If you are looking to start a meditative practice then you are in luck, because there are so many amazing benefits achieved from a meditative practice.   Whether you are looking to feel better, manage stress, achieve better focus, or heal from a chronic health condition, mediation can benefit you.

Positive effects of meditation:

  • Lower Blood Pressure
  • Less Stress
  • Lower stress chemicals in the blood
  • increased healing and repair
  • Better focus and attention
  • Less Anxiety
  • greater sense of awareness
  • Less Pain

Contemporary research is finding long term effects on positive brain function and immune system function.  Other cultures and theories use meditation to achieve liberation of attachments to things, and to simply achieve presence in the moment.  No matter what your reason you will reap huge benefits.

How do I do it?

There are so many methods and ways to meditate.  I believe this is the main reason most people hesitate to start meditating.  There is so much information out there that people become overwhelmed before they even get started!  Or we think, "I need to be a certain amount of "zen" before I start meditating."

Meditation is not suppose to stress you out!  A great way to get started is to simply find a quiet space, sit in a chair, close your eyes and focus on your breath.  "In through your nose, out through your mouth."  If you can do this, then you are already practicing the refocusing technique of meditation!

Tim Ferris, a popular podcaster and author utilizes Transcendental Meditation where you simple think a mantra for approximately a 20 minute setting.  He notes that even if he has a really hard time meditating or simply feels like he had a "bad meditation", he simply reminds himself that he practiced refocusing for 20 minutes... and that is the point to practicing meditation, to refocus!

Types of Mediation Include:

  • Transendental
  • Guided imagery
  • Active Mediation
  • Passive Meditation
  • Physical Relaxation

There are also plenty of online tools and apps to help you such as HeadSpace.  You don't need a guru to get started, but it helps to have a friend:)

Why it's important?

This is my personal take on why meditation is important.  Beyond better health, relaxation, and refocusing, many of us never slow down enough to really get to know ourselves.  In a world that models striving for higher status, higher income, and perception, there is less importance being placed on knowing yourself.

Meditation helps slow the world down, your world down.  It helps reconnect  you with who you are, what you value, and what's important to you.  Meditation serves as a reminder that you have the power to slow yourself down, and reclaim that you are your own healer, and you have control of your own chaos.

Meditation in itself is not the healer.  Like chiropractic it removes a barrier to the natural healing power of the body.  Just as chiropractic removes interference to the nervous system (which is involved in every function of the human body), meditation helps remove stressful blocks that get in our way of being who we truly are.  It truly is a gift to help us slow down, to speed up!
